The King Returns
Every day that passed in the dark, dusty dungeon in Doomsville, King Nature spent worried about GreenVille's future. "How will GoGreen Man find me? I don't even know where I am!" he muttered while pacing the room, "Instead of just worrying, I need to figure out how to get help AND find out where I am." In looking around, he noticed there were no windows in the room and that the walls appeared to be concrete. He suspected he was in an old building, maybe even an underground bomb shelter, but there were no bomb shelters in GreenVille. Well, at least there weren't any that he knew of and he'd been king for many years. Dr. Pollution must have taken him away from GreenVille, but where?! He decided the only thing he could do was to tap on the walls using a form of morse code (an old form of communication using a tapping sound). To be honest, King Nature didn't really have much faith that anyone could hear him. If he wasn't in GreenVille, then there weren't going to be many people around to hear him. It would take a miracle.
Dr. Pollution called Pol' Tick Al to see what was going on in GreenVille and hear how their plans were coming along. Pol' Tick Al told Dr. Pollution the news that he was now King of GreenVille. He also told Dr. Pollution that GoGreen Man had resigned from his job and left town. Now that was some good news for Dr. Pollution so he praised Pol’ Tick Al for his efforts. But then he told Pol' Tick Al that it was time to start the next phase of their plan. Part of it was going to be repealing all the old laws in GreenVille that prevented pollution. He knew it would upset a lot of people, but since Pol' Tick Al was king, he had the power to do it anyway.
Pol’ Tick Al’s first action as King was to put Paul Tician in as the leader of the congressmen, as he had promised. Remember, Paul Tician is Pol’ Tick Al’s good friend and biggest supporter.
After formally repealing the old laws prohibiting pollution, he appointed Waste Woman as the chairwoman over recycling. Petrol Pirate was given the position of Minister of the Economy. That made him very happy because he could now make rules to help his businesses!
Pol’ Tick Al was stuck though. Who could he put in GoGreen Man’s former position, Chief of the GPA (GreenVille Protection Agency)? He had a brilliant idea! Dr. Pollution’s words came back to him, “One day we can use Pande Opposito for what we want.” Thinking about it further, he realized Pande Opposito was perfect for it because he did everything the opposite of what he was supposed to. He would mess everything up without even trying to. So, he appointed Pande Opposito as the new Chief of the GPA.
Congressmen Dewey Goode and Mr. Gravytrain were appalled when they heard about all the changes in government. They tried to stop the appointments and repealing the environmental laws, but they didn't have enough support. In desperation, they approached Hannah Heart telling her they really needed to talk to GoGreen Man and explained to her about the changes in GreenVille.
In a panic, Hannah Heart called GoGreen Man. "Where are you?! What are you doing?" she cried. "We are in a crisis in GreenVille!" She then went on to tell him what was going on. GoGreen Man was upset. "Now I know for sure that Pol' Tick Al was tricking us! I can't find any trace of King Nature in the ocean or any of the surrounding areas, including the mountains. I've looked everywhere and I don't know what else to do!" he said. Hannah Heart then suggested everyone get together, including Congressmen Dewey Goode and Mr. Gravytrain, to talk to Professor Fusionstein. They really needed to know if he had any suggestions for them.
By this time, Professor Fusionstein had already heard about the changes in GreenVille. He gathered with King Nature's close friends and the two concerned congressmen, Dewey Goode and Mr. Gravytrain to see if they could figure something out.
During the meeting, Dewey Goode told GoGreen Man, "Since Pol' Tick Al is king of GreenVille, it will take more than a couple congressmen to block his changes. We already tried and it didn’t work. If Waste Woman, Petrol Pirate and Pande Opposito work for GreenVille, it will be destroyed. The old laws helped GreenVille stay clean, if they are gone then garbage and chemicals will get into our water, on our streets and …well, all that we’ve worked hard for will be ruined!"
Everyone agreed that Pol' Tick Al had played a nasty trick on GreenVille. GoGreen Man told the group, "When I saw the ripped clothes, there was no trace of blood on them. It didn't look like a shark attack." That gave the congressmen hope and they told GoGreen Man about the sentence they had added, that if King Nature came back then Pol' Tick Al would have to step down. When King Nature’s friends heard that, they were ecstatic (very happy) because they still had hope he would be found. They all agreed that the only way to save GreenVille was to find King Nature and bring him back to his rightful place.
GoGreen Man told Professor Fusionstein, "I'm glad to hear about this clause, but I have looked everywhere for King Nature. He is nowhere to be found!"
"Hmmm,” replied Professor Fusionstein, “if you can't find King Nature and Dr. Pollution has moved his lab, then he has found a place where he feels safe.” He paused, then exclaimed, "I know! What about underground? If he’s nowhere above ground, it’s the only thing that makes sense.” Everyone murmured at the thought. “If this is true, I have some very good news. I have been working on two inventions, actually, I just completed them! One is a sonar underground mapping (SUMM) machine. It uses sound waves to find differences underground, so you can map it in 3-D. Maybe we can find new caves or unexplored areas that way." Everyone thought that was a great idea and wanted to get started on it right away. Hannah Heart was especially excited with this idea, but worried, "How will we get around underground? It's very hard to do that, plus it's dark and dirty." Professor Fusionstein laughed, "It's good them my other invention is the worminator. It's in the shape of an earthworm and will travel underground like one. Remember, I said I had two new inventions, this is the other one!" Everyone was filled with renewed hope.
GoGreen Man and Professor Fusionstein discussed where the best place was to start their search. They unanimously decided to begin where the King was king-napped, the Green Castle. Once they got there with the SUMM (sonar underground mapping machine), they were forbidden to go inside. This was because Pol’ Tick Al had already moved in and definitely didn’t want GoGreen Man and Professor Fusionstein snooping around. Fortunately for them, Pol’ Tick Al hadn’t had time to get rid of all King Nature's castle guards. GoGreen Man asked Mr. Guard (a good friend of his) if they could do a search around the castle. Mr. Guard had been the one who'd discovered the cut wires and was another citizen who didn't believe King Nature was gone forever. In addition, he didn't agree with the changes Pol’ Tick Al had made, so he was glad to help GoGreen Man. He told them he couldn’t do anything to help them during the day, but to come back that night when Pol’ Tick Al was asleep.
Late that night when Pol' Tick Al was asleep, Professor Fusionstein and GoGreen Man went to the castle, again. Once there, they put Professor Fusionstein's sonar mapping machine down to map underneath the castle and its surrounding areas. It was a very powerful machine so it didn't take long for them to discover the secret tunnel on the edge of the forest around the castle. Shaking his head, GoGreen Man told Professor Fusionstein, "We found it! You’re amazing, Professor Fusionstein! I can't believe it’s that close to the castle! When I looked here I never saw it, it was camouflaged so well. This must be the way Dr. Pollution escaped with King Nature the night he was king-napped." Professor Fusionstein agreed, "Yes, Dr. Pollution is a very smart man and he wouldn't have risked being seen for very long. I still don't understand how he got into the castle past the guards. None of the guards reported seeing anyone that night. Hmmm...it's a mystery." (They didn’t know about the camouflage suit.)
Anyway, as GoGreen Man was about to go into the tunnel, Professor Fusionstein stopped him, "Wait! We need to see where the tunnel goes. It may not be safe. I know you want to find King Nature right now, but we need to be careful. You know Dr. Pollution wouldn't leave this tunnel empty." Professor Fusionstein was right, because Dr. Pollution had put sensors the tunnel to tell him when someone entered it. GoGreen Man agreed and then suggested they send in the g-cam (good camcorder). When the g-cam went in, the sensors immediately informed Dr. Pollution that something had entered his secret tunnel. He suspected it was GoGreen Man and chuckled, "HAHAHA! I knew you would find my tunnel one day, but this is your last day!" He pushed a button in his lab and that section of the tunnel collapsed with a loud boom! The sensors he had placed in the tunnel were also small bombs that he could set off.
Pol' Tick Al woke up with a start, "What happened?! Why did I suddenly wake up?!" He rushed out to the guards and asked them. They didn't know anything (they were pretending), so Pol' Tick Al suspected something was wrong. Concerned, he called Dr. Pollution. When Pol’ Tick Al asked him if something was wrong, Dr. Pollution told him that someone had entered his secret tunnel. He suspected it was GoGreen Man, but told Pol’ Tick Al not to worry because he’d blown up the tunnel. He told Pol’ Tick Al he’d go check out the tunnel. Pol’ Tick Al was furious and sent guards out with instructions to arrest anyone found near the castle.
Outside the castle, Professor Fusionstein and GoGreen Man quickly made their escape. They were concerned that Pol' TIck Al would find them. The two men refused to give up their search for King Nature though, and continued to use the sonar underground machine. What they discovered shocked them both, there were tunnels going everywhere under GreenVille. Not only that, most of the tunnels eventually went in the direction of Doomsville! Professor Fusionstein and GoGreen Man couldn't believe that anyone in their right mind would be anywhere close to Doomsville. It was still a dangerous place to be in or near, even with the protective shield. GoGreen Man asked Professor Fusionstein, "Is it okay to go there? It is my understanding it is still a very harmful radioactive site. How can Dr. Pollution have a secret lab there?"
Professor Fusionstein replied, "A long time ago, my grandfather was working on the nuclear power plant project. One day there was an accident when reactor had a meltdown. It shut down the site permanently. There was always a dark cloud over the area and animals that went in by mistake never came back out. That’s why my grandfather invented an invisible shield to block the radiation from spreading out of Doomsville. It also blocks animals and people from going in.” Professor Fusionstein went on to explain that it had been secure ever since that time. But then he remembered something else his grandfather told him. “WAIT! I think I remember my grandfather saying that inside Doomsville there was even a radiation free location. As a matter of fact, I believe that's how he got out when the accident happened! Remember hearing about my grandfather, Professor Ine Shtine? He suggested they build a thick concrete room surrounded by lead just to be safe since this was the first nuclear power plant to be built. The room was to be built next to the reactor in case of emergency. That's probably where Dr. Pollution has his secret lab. It's a perfect location because no one can reach it from above ground or the sky. A deep tunnel is the only way in and I now remember where the workers, including my grandfather escaped! The tunnel comes out in a safe zone well away from the reactor. It’s...well, just follow me!" GoGreen Man was extremely excited at this news. “That’s why I couldn’t find Dr. Pollution! I searched everywhere for him. I thought he might be in there, but couldn’t understand how he’d survive. Now I know!”
When they got there, they weren’t surprised to see the tunnel entrance being guarded by the Trashinator 2007, an evil robot. GoGreen Man told Professor Fusionstein to wait while he took care of the robot. As GoGreen Man snuck behind the Trashinator and was just about to break him, he heard a sound. It was Dr. Pollution on his way to check on the tunnel. He was in his petrol drilling machine. Dr. Pollution wanted to make sure GoGreen Man had been destroyed in the tunnel explosion. When GoGreen Man saw him, he kept quiet to see what would happen next. Dr. Pollution came out of the machine and went to the Trashinator, "If anyone tries to get into this tunnel, activate the emergency tunnel closure button. No one, I mean no one, should get inside. I would rather you blow up my secret lab than let anyone inside this tunnel." Dr. Pollution then got back into the drilling machine and left.
When GoGreen Man heard what Dr. Pollution said, he knew he needed to get Professor Fusionstein's opinion. The Professor thought that it wasn't a good idea to enter the tunnel directly from that entrance. He told GoGreen Man, "If an emergency alarm goes off, it might endanger King Nature. We also don't know what traps Dr. Pollution has laid in there. It could be better to find where Dr. Pollution has hidden King Nature and go in that way. We can use my worminator to go to the exact spot. Let's use the sonar underground monitoring machine to find the underground tunnel."
In his room (the dungeon), King Nature was still pounding his form of Morse code on the wall in the hope that someone would hear it. It was this noise that the sonar detector picked up (remember it uses sound to drawn a map). It couldn't identify what the sound was, but there was a certain pattern. "What's this weird sound?" asked GoGreen Man. "That's Morse code!" cried Professor Fusionstein. "He is saying, 'Help me!' That's great because if he keeps it up, the sonar detector can find him very easily. Now we can use the worminator to go in there. I designed the worminator to make small holes in the ground. It's very quiet and precise, like an earthworm. GoGreen Man, could you take the worminator to get King Nature? GreenVille's future is in your hands." Although GoGreen Man was very brave, he was still a little nervous about going into Doomsville. Professor Fusionstein reassured him, “You will be far enough underground that you won’t have to worry about radiation exposure.” With that reassurance, GoGreen Man took the worminator and started drilling. Very soon he was out of sight and underground. When GoGreen Man finally reached the concrete room, he realized he needed something special to drill King Nature out. He called Professor Fusionstein and told him about the concrete room. "The concrete is not too hard for my worminator. You just need to switch the blades into diamond cut blade mode. It will go through the concrete as easily as it went through the dirt," replied Professor Fusionstein. Sure enough! He made it through!
King Nature was wondering what the noise was outside the room. He was a little concerned because he had no idea what was happening and he hoped it wasn’t something Dr. Pollution was up to. When GoGreen Man broke through the concrete, King Nature couldn't believe his eyes. "How did you find me!" he cried. "You are certainly the protector of GreenVille!" GoGreen Man was more concerned about the king and how he was doing, but he told him, "If you hadn't been using Morse Code on the walls, it would have taken us longer to find you. First, we need to escape before Dr. Pollution comes back. I'll tell you what's been going on in GreenVille on our way out."
When Dr. Pollution couldn’t find any evidence of GoGreen Man, he came in to taunt King Nature. "What's this?! What is that hole in the wall? Where's King Nature!" he bellowed. Immediately, he went to the Trashinator and demanded an answer, "What have you been doing? Where is King Nature? Argh! I have to talk to Pol' Tick Al immediately!" But it was too late.
Professor Fusionstein, GoGreen Man, and King Nature went to the place where news about King Nature would spread the fastest, GVTN! GreenVille saw that their King had returned and rejoiced.
When Pol’ Tick Al saw the news that the king had been found, he was in shock, “No way!” Then his phone started ringing, it was Dr. Pollution. “King Nature is missing! I think GoGreen Man found him,” said a panicked Dr. Pollution (which was very rare emotion for him). Pol’ Tick Al furiously responded, “It’s too late. They are on TV right now announcing that King Nature is back. I have to go summon the congressmen quickly and demand they keep me as king. This isn’t right – I’m already king of GreenVille!”
Quickly, Pol’ Tick Al summoned the congressmen for an emergency meeting. During the meeting he told them he was going to remain king, even though King Nature had returned. He reminded them that once appointed king, it was for life. But, two congressmen were pleased to prove him wrong. Congressmen Dewey Goode and Mr. Gravytrain brought out their copies of the declaration making Pol’ Tick Al, king. They showed him the clause he had agreed to, that if King Nature returned, he would give up the crown and title. Simmering in anger, Pol’ Tick Al wanted to fight, but realized if he did – he’d lose his position as congressman, so he just gave up. Pleased they had the foresight(the ability to think ahead), the two congressmen went to welcome their true king back, King Nature.
Quickly overcoming their shock at seeing King Nature, all of GreenVille came together at City Hall to welcome him back. Fireworks were going off to celebrate his being found. The king had returned.
King Nature went to the podium that had been hastily set up and waved at the citizens of GreenVille. It took a while before King Nature could speak before the shouts and cheers died down. Hannah Heart, Water Woman, Sandra Sunburn and even Roger Recycle had tears of joy in their eyes. Finally, King Nature was able to speak. He was overcome with tears himself at the love and support being poured out by GreenVille. He began to speak, “Even while I was gone, I felt the love and support of GreenVille. I am sorry you had to go through the past days, especially the mourning. Without GoGreen Man’s bravery, I would not have made it back to you.” At this point, huge shouts went up for GoGreen Man. King Nature, motioned for the crowd to quiet down, “He has devoted his life to keeping GreenVille safe and clean. For this, he will receive the highest honor I, as king, can bestow. I honor GoGreen Man today with knighthood.” With this, everyone erupted with huge shouts of joy, praising GoGreen Man’s bravery. King Nature also proclaimed honors to Professor Fusionstein for his tireless devotion in saving him. Although Professor Fusionstein was the lead scientist in GreenVille, he would now become the Royal Scientist, the highest honor a scientist can receive in GreenVille. The cheers continued, this time for Professor Fusionstein.
While there was joy and happiness at GreenVille’s City Hall, but outside GreenVille there was anger and plotting. Dr. Pollution would not give up, not when he had been so close to succeeding. He would have to think of something else to do to GreenVille. What? He didn’t know, but he knew he wanted GoGreen Man and Professor Fusionstein gone. With them out of the way, he would have no problem taking over GreenVille. Pol’ Tick Al, Petrol Pirate and Waste Woman all joined together. The feeling of power was one they did not want to give up. They united together to plot the demise of GoGreen Man and Professor Fusionstein. They were determined to reclaim GreenVille as their own. How they did it wouldn’t matter, it just had to be done.
