The Water Cyclone

GreenVille’s citizens were in a panic.  Everyone had seen the news and was hearing the emergency sirens go off.  The GreenVille police were working hard trying to get the elderly and young to safety.  The news team was reporting that in a tornado, the safest place to hide is in a basement.

Since this tornado was created in the Yellow Desert, it had the added danger of bringing a lot of dust.  The reporters also talked about the danger of breathing in all the dust and suggested those with asthma or other breathing conditions wear face masks.  Everyone was worried about what would happen next.

King Nature and GreenVille’s Emergency Management Team met to make plans.  On the team were Congressmen Dewey Goode and Mr. Gravytrain, Professor Fusionstein, and the meteorologists.  Pol’ Tick Al had been summoned, but as we know, he didn’t plan on showing up because he knew exactly what Dr. Pollution had planned for GreenVille.

While pandemonium (chaos) was breaking out in GreenVille, GoGreen Man was watching the huge tornado whip around the valley, gathering more strength.  He asked Professor Fusionstein, “Is there any way this tornado can be stopped?”  Professor Fusionstein had only one idea, but he didn’t want to tell GoGreen Man.  Why?  Because it was more dangerous than anything else he’d done.

Any hope Professor Fusionstein had that the tornado would break apart or move away had left.   He checked with the meteorologists one more time on the projected path of the tornado.  As he feared, it was on a direct, but erratic route to GreenVille.  The only good news for GreenVille was that the tornado seemed to be taking a longer, indirect route because it was going through the valley, instead of straight over the mountain top.

Again, GoGreen Man insisted on doing something.  The tornado was reaching the end of the valley and was getting ready to hit the outer farmland (countryside).  Up until now, no people had been hurt or near the tornado, but that was about to change.

“Professor Fusionstein, we have to do something now!  The tornado is reaching the outskirts of GreenVille – it is now leaving the valley!” GoGreen Man fervently asked again, “What can I do to save GreenVille? We don’t have much time!”

With reluctance, Professor Fusionstein told GoGreen Man he had an untested theory.  He stressed to GoGreen Man that it was extremely dangerous and that he could lose his life if the plan failed.  GoGreen Man didn’t care.  He insisted, “Please, tell me what I can do!  I will do anything to save the people of GreenVille.  If anything happens to me, I won’t blame you, Professor Fusionstein.  You are like a father to me.”

With regret, Professor Fusionstein told GoGreen Man about the water cyclone.  The tornado coming through the valley of GreenVille was spinning counterclockwise, but Professor Fusionstein’s dangerous plan was to create a water cyclone spinning the opposite way, clockwise.   His theory supposed that when they ran into each other, they would violently break apart and die down.

“Recently, I’ve discovered I can create a water cyclone.  A cyclone is really an old term for tornado.   Are you sure you want to do this GoGreen Man?  When I create the cyclone, you will need to go inside it to guide its direction.  We need you to head directly toward the yellow tornado.  That’s how dangerous it is.”

GoGreen Man was determined, “I will do it.   I don’t want GreenVille to be destroyed.”

“Okay, GoGreen Man.  Listen carefully to me.  I need moist warm air and clouds for the tornado.  Since I don’t have that, I will have to use the solar projector to gather the sun and heat the water in the lake.  The water will heat up and vaporize, while the winds get created with the cycle – hot air rises, cooler air rushes in to take its place.  When this process gets started you need to get in the middle of it with your GreenCopter.  Rotate your blades and stir up the wind even more to create the water cyclone.”

It was a daring plan, but GoGreen Man went along with it.  Professor Fusionstein heated up the water with the solar projector (which was normally used for night-time emergencies) and everything started working according to plan.  The wind was being created.

When the time was right, Professor Fusionstein told GoGreen Man to get in the middle of the wind with his GreenCopter.  The GreenCopter’s rotors were channeling the wind upward because GoGreen Man had tilted their angle.  It worked!  The water cyclone started spinning furiously, picking up moisture from the lake and was becoming stronger and stronger.

Unfortunately, GoGreen Man was spinning around, too.  Professor Fusionstein asked if GoGreen Man was okay, “Can you control it?”

“Yes, I’m fine,” said GoGreen Man.

“Listen!  This is the most important thing I can tell you.  Right before your water cyclone collides with the yellow tornado, you will need to escape in your GreenCopter.  When they collide their combined air pressure will be too strong and everything will blow up - including you and the GreenCopter if you’re still in the water cyclone.”

“I’m ready, Professor Fusionstein,” said GoGreen Man.  It was just in time, too because the yellow tornado had just entered the farmland of GreenVille.  Barns were being destroyed, silos and animals were being picked up and sucked into the sky.  It was truly a frightening experience, fraught with devastation.

***

Dr. Pollution was ecstatic at what he was seeing.  “That’s right, Gas Goon!  Gobble everything in your path – leave nothing but destruction behind you.  Today is the day I get my revenge on Professor Fusionstein, GoGreen Man and GreenVille!  After today, everything will be wiped out.  I will then rebuild the city my way.  HAHAHAHAHA!”

GoGreen Man was having a hard time controlling the water cyclone.  With all the spinning around, GoGreen Man was almost unconscious.  He concentrated with all his might on the radar screen in front of him.  The yellow tornado was getting closer and closer.

***

All of GreenVille was watching with bated breath.  What was going on?  The news had broadcast there was a second tornado, this time coming from the lake.  Everyone was scared, especially since they didn’t know GoGreen Man was in it.

***

Dr. Pollution noticed, a little late, the second tornado.  “What’s that?!  I didn’t create that, where did it come from,” he shouted.   Dr. Pollution didn’t know what was going on.  What he did know was that he hadn’t created it.  “Gas Goon, avoid at all costs the other tornado!”

Gas Goon was doing exactly what Dr. Pollution had ordered.  He tried avoiding the water cyclone, but GoGreen Man had gotten too close.  It was like a game of cat and mouse, with GoGreen Man being the cat.

***

About this time, it was reported that GoGreen Man was in the second tornado.  GVTN had sent someone to talk to Professor Fusionstein, when they found him communicating with GoGreen Man in the water cyclone.  GreenVille’s citizens were stunned!  Although they didn’t know what was going on, they believed GoGreen Man and Professor Fusionstein would help them.

When Professor Fusionstein saw how close the water cyclone was to the yellow tornado, he yelled out, “Abort!  Abort, GoGreen Man!”  When GoGreen Man didn’t listen, he cried out again, “Abort, GoGreen Man!  Get out now!  It’s too dangerous!”

Stubbornly, GoGreen Man stayed.  He was determined to make sure the two tornados connected and collapsed.

GreenVille’s citizens watched in horror as they realized what GoGreen Man was intending to do.  They feared for their friend and helper and prayed for his safety.  Outside, they could hear loud, rumbling noises from the tornados and the whirling, rushing, squealing wind.

Gas Goon had almost reached downtown GreenVille.  There was absolutely no more time left for GoGreen Man.  He rammed the water cyclone into middle of the yellow tornado and at the last possible second ejected himself out of the GreenCopter.

***

When the two tornadoes collided there was a loud, frightening boom along with a high-pitched ripping noise as they tore apart.  Both the tornados had been spinning frantically, but in opposite directions so when they collided it was phenomenal to watch.  The GreenCopter, from which GoGreen Man had escaped, was broken apart in a second.

Professor Fusionstein’s theory was perfect.  The winds disappeared, as if nothing had happened.  All the dust from the yellow tornado had mixed with the moisture in the water cyclone and created a big blob of mud on the ground (instead of flying all over the place).

***

Bursting out of their basements, GreenVille’s citizens were ecstatic!  GoGreen Man had saved GreenVille yet again.  While everyone else was rejoicing, Hannah Heart, Sandra Sunburn, Water Woman and Roger Recycle were desperately trying to find GoGreen Man.  They rushed to the scene and met Professor Fusionstein there.

***

Dr. Pollution was irate.  “How could this have happened?  What happened to my Gas Goon?  Where did my yellow tornado go?  GoGreen Man!”  If he hadn’t seen it with his own eyes, he would have never believed it.  To be honest, he still didn’t believe!

***

When GoGreen Man’s friends finally found him, they broke down in tears.  He was broken and bleeding.  Professor Fusionstein ordered them to call an ambulance, without delay.  Hannah Heart was broken-hearted at the sight of GoGreen Man unconscious on the ground.   As he was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, she was there right next to him.

The doctors at the hospital were shaken up when they saw GoGreen Man.  He was taken into surgery straight away.  While in surgery, they thought they’d lost him and had to use defibrillator paddles to bring him back.

In the hospital waiting room, Professor Fusionstein was filled with despair.  He felt it was his fault that GoGreen Man was in serious condition.  Outside, he could hear King Nature giving a speech to GreenVille’s citizens reassuring them.  What had been a happy moment had quickly turned into despair.

King Nature announced, “GoGreen Man risked his life for all of us.  We must always remember today and what he was willing to sacrifice for us.  Never must we doubt his devotion to GreenVille.  He is still alive, but his condition is very serious.  GoGreen Man needs our prayers and positive thoughts now more than ever before.”

As the King talked, the citizens were overcome with sadness.  It had been such a difficult day and had ended with horrible consequences.  People were wondering if there would ever be peace in GreenVille, especially without GoGreen Man there to help.

That’s a good question.  Could GreenVille ever have peace or were they always destined to fight Dr. Pollution?  Find out what happened to GoGreen Man in the next story.
